Marc Koltun
Marc Koltun's love affair with music spans 56 years. Starting at the age of four his heart was captivated and nurtured by the sounds of Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Sammy Davis Jr., Robert Goulet, Matt Monro, Joe Williams, Johnny Hartman, Barbra Streisand and countless others whose legendary voices and singing styles left an indelible imprint on his soul. His passion for the timeless love songs from “The Great American Songbook” has never left him.
In 1972, after a four year stint in the Air Force, he began taking voice from Muriel Brown-Older—who at that time was the director of countless musicals at the Palo Alto Community Theatre—and he immediately found himself singing and tap dancing in the musical “George M”. In subsequent years he performed in “The Apple Tree”, “A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum” and “Follies” (the latter staged at the Burgess Theatre in Menlo Park).
After a brief stint singing and accompanying himself on a 12-string guitar at the old Moss Beach Distillery for dinners and tips in 1975, he moved to San Diego to chase his lifelong dream to become a professional singer/entertainer, singing jazz standards, show tunes, and R&B at venues in the famous Hotel Circle. When it became painfully apparent that Rock and Roll was swamping the music scene, immediately making his standards-oriented repertoire passé, he set aside his dream in 1976 to pursue a career in electronics marketing.
Now, after 34 years, his passion to sing what he still considers to be the most beautiful love songs ever written has been rekindled. Perhaps more importantly, his own life experiences have infused his heart with a deeper understanding of the lyrics that the composers used to immortalize the hope, the passion and the pain of love.
